Types of Lubes
Like gravity, friction is another natural occurrence that we cannot escape. A stone dropped from above cannot help but fall and two sticks continually rubbed together cannot stop creating heat. Or could they?
Lubricants are people's way of trying to fight friction, or atleast it is used in an attempt to lessen it. Also called lubes, lubricants are substances, whether solid, gas or liquid, that are used in order to lessen friction between two or more bodies. You can also classify lubricants and lubes based on their main uses because lubes also have other purposes.
Some lubricants are used to transfer heat from the surface of one body to another or also to keep the temperature of one body from affecting that of another like inside an engine. Lubricants can also be used to remove dirt and debris of foreign bodies and motor oil in engines that also clean engine parts is another great example of this kind of lubricant. Other lubricants are used to prevent erosion and corrosion like when we put lubricants on door hinges to keep them from rusting.
And we can also classify lubricants based on their chemical components. The famous petroleum jelly which is marketed through different brand names, as its name suggests, is a petroleum based lubricant. There are also water-based lubes, oil based lubes and lanolin-based lubes, all of which are liquid lubricants.
Surprisingly, there are also solid lubricants and a popular example is Teflon which is used in order to make non-stick pans and pots for cooking. Although gas lubricants do exist, they are rather hard to come up with and are usually applied on complex industrial machineries and medical researches.
